14 words that changed my life
The other day I was recording a podcast with Peter DeWitt . . . Yes, that Peter DeWitt!
It was most certainly a surreal moment in my professional life.
And we were talking about my new book due out in September (Peter endorsed it 🤯🤯🤯 ).
He shared that he never heard the famous Jim Rohn quote that I share in my book:
“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”
I share that quote in my book because those 14 words changed my life.
It was back in 2015.
I was listening to a podcast, and the host riffed on the Rohn quote.
The quote etched itself into my brain.
Like Peter, those 14 words challenged me to reflect on who I surrounded myself with . . .
Way back in the summer of 2015 I had a dream.
I had a dream to start a podcast I was going to name, “The Better Leaders Better Schools Podcast with Daniel Bauer.”
I had a dream that I wrote in my journal and showed to friends and family.
I had a dream of what the show could become and how I could not only become a better leader myself, but help the listeners grow their leadership skills as well.
Many (not all) of the people I showed my dream to said something very similar . . .
“That will never work.”
Lucky for me, I made a decision to join a mastermind around the same time.
My mastermind peers had similar expansive, radical, and ruckus-making dreams for themselves.
I found the mastermind to be an environment that was both encouraging and challenging.
But nobody said, “That will never work.”
Instead they said, “If that would work, what would have to be true?”
It’s a simple reframe.
One filled with possibility, planning, and most importantly, ACTION!
So when you reflect on the people in your “inner circle” what types of things do they say to you?
Are they encouraging?
Or do they deflate your dreams?
Remember as Jim Rohn said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”
It was true for Jim.
It was true for me.
It is true for you.
